Exercises for Shoulder

The Barbell Shoulder Press. If you want to gain strength, go with the barbell shoulder press. This compound exercise is excellent for helping to boost your muscular strength capacity, which will then help fend off injuries.

Because you don’t have to use as much energy stabilizing the weight with a barbell, it tends to be superior for strength improvements compared to dumbbells.

External/Internal Rotations. Another excellent exercise for the shoulders? External and internal rotations. Most people do not think of this as a shoulder exercise to do in the gym because you usually use such lightweight.

Make no mistake about it, however. It is one of the best ways to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles, which are susceptible to injury.

Whether you choose to use a resistance band or a set of dumbbells get this exercise in two to three times weekly.

Cable Lateral Raises. Cable lateral raises are the next exercises to add to a well-balanced shoulder routine. The beautiful thing about cable exercises is they are going to apply constant tension to the muscles as you go about the training, helping you gain much more strength.

This exercise is also an isolation movement, so is ideal for hitting the lateral delts on their own. Use it towards the end of your workout session when your shoulders are reaching the final point of fatigue.

Dumbbell Shoulder Press. Finally, the dumbbell shoulder press is the last exercise you may add to your workout protocol. This one can be swapped on and off with the barbell shoulder press as they both are very similar movement patterns.

The dumbbell shoulder press does require more stabilization, however, so for that reason; it will work the abs as well as the muscle fibers deep within the shoulder joint. You may find you have to use a slightly lighter weight with this exercise, but realize this is normal and does not mean you have lost strength.

They’ve tried several different medication regiments, altered their diets, and spend their lives in fear of triggers like meat, wine, and sometimes caffeine.

Many have even tried alternative therapies like acupuncture and conventional chiropractic with no change.

When they finally sit down and speak with me, they’ve been suffering for years, and almost numb to the fact that they have constant pain in the head. Some look a little pale, others need the lights off in the office, and some even come in wearing sun glasses. All of them are a little doubtful and skeptical that their condition can be cured.

Less Focus on Cure, More Focus on Cause

When most people walk into a doctor’s office with an ailment, what they are most often searching for is a cure. Though migraines are terribly common, and have been around for centuries, a cure has been elusive for the millions of patients suffering on a daily basis. Over the counter migraine medications are usually a first line of treatment, followed by prescription medications like Imitrex and Treximet. There is also a focus on removing triggers from a person’s life like chocolate, caffeine, and certain scents/perfumes.

The truth is that headaches (especially migraines) cannot be treated as a simplistic disease that is the same in all people. Headaches are a dynamic entity with causes that are multifactorial. Instead of looking at a migraine as a disease entity, it should be seen as a symptom of a neurophysiological process gone haywire.

The Trigeminocervical Complex: The Pain Gate Keeper of the Head/Neck

Don’t get hung up on the terminology, the name is not important for the casual reader. It is important to understand that near the top part of your spinal cord. In the area surrounded by your top 3 neck vertebra is a very important bundle of nerve cells. These specific nerve cells filter incoming signals from the outer covering of the brain known as meninges. They also filter incoming signals from the blood vessels of the brain, as well as signals that come from the neck.migraine

You see, the brain does not have any receptors that trigger pain. It’s kind of crazy to think about, but it’s true. However, the outer protective covering of the brain, and the blood vessels are very pain sensitive. When the receptors from these structures get set off, then a cascade of events can take place leading to the blood vessels in the brain opening up and becoming inflamed.

It’s important that we have ‘filters’ like the trigeminocervical complex around to make sure that not every pain signal gets to the brain. In that way, it acts like a gatekeeper. If it let every pain signal through, you would be in a state of pain without end.

So what went wrong with the built-in gate keeper of pain to the brain?

The normal alignment and movement of the head and neck serve as a buffer to pain signals that go into the gate keeper. When you lose the normal alignment, several things can happen.

Blood flow in and out of the brain is compromised
Inflammatory molecules stay in the brain’s blood supply longer
Muscles and ligaments of the neck mis-fire
Low grade inflammation persists in the joints of the neck
Small muscles in the neck may pull against the brain’s outer covering

When this happens, you have an environment where the trigeminocervical nucleus can get overloaded with pain signals without the buffer of signals from normal head and neck movement. All of a sudden, a seemingly harmless trigger can send someone with a tendency towards migraines can be sent in a downward spiral of a pounding headache.

This is due to immobile and stiff joints.

To construct the device the pediatrician will make a mold of the child’s foot, which can help when creating custom orthotics to accommodate each child’s unique needs. If it is a sports-related injury using pediatric orthotics during the process of healing may speed it up. Using them will often work to ease any pressure on the area that was injured. Sports-related injuries treated using these medical devices include fractures, sprains, and strains. In some instances a pediatrician will need to write a prescription for devices that are specially made or certain inserts for their shoe.

Fix Bad Posture

To fix bad posture one of the number one methods is to just stand up straight. That’s right what your mom has been telling you is the best way overall. If you practice sitting and standing straight all day everyday for 30 days; I promise you will be shocked by the results. Your posture will dramatically improve.

To find your normal posture take your shoulders and bring them all the way up and back and then let them hang down. This is your normal posture and a great way to work on shoulder protraction.

Shoulder protraction is caused by a tight chest, tight lats, and a weak upper back (rhomboids). The way how to fix bad posture problem would be working to strengthen the rhomboids twice as much as the chest and lats.

Exercises such as barbell rows and reverse cable flies will greatly help you fix your weak rhomboids. Also spending a lot of time actively and statically stretching the chest and the lats to relieve some of the tightness.

A great chest stretch is done by holding your arms bent at 90 degrees and leaning against a doorway with your chest sticking forward. To stretch the lats hang off of a pull up bar relaxed for at least 20 seconds 4x.

An anterior pelvic tilt is caused by tight hip flexors that pull the pelvis down from the front. Tight lower back muscles pull the pelvis down from the back symbiotically creating a steering wheel turning effect on your pelvis. The glutes are weakened by the position that your hips are in, and are unable to pull the hips into the proper alignment.
